Jonas Hiller in net with his "Nega Mask".
The Goalie Mask Project is a site that wants to show off all the creative art on goalie masks from all over the NHL and more. Ever since Gerry Cheevers began marking on his mask where he would need stitches without it, mask art has become a famous tradition in hockey, showcasing each goalie's personality. They help bring a sense of uniqueness and style to the game.
From Jacques Plante's plain mask, to Hasek's cage, to Gary Simmon's snake mask, to Jonas Hiller's detailed and colorful masks, there's no shortage of artwork being airbrushed onto each and every mask. In the GMP, our mission is to show off the art, give kudos to the artists, and highlight each player's personality.
If you have a mask you'd like to see featured on the site, please feel free to drop us a line at our email here.
The Creater, In His Colorado Flag Mask
John Lovato has had a deep love and passion for hockey, dating back to watching the Colorado Avalanche, first watching after their Stanley Cup win in 2001. The interest became a passion when he watched goalies Tyler Weiman and Peter Manino backstop their teams to championships in the CHL and NCAA respectively, during the 04-05 NHL lockout. Since then, John has collecting hockey memorabilia, mostly focusing on goalie jerseys, sticks, and masks.
After beginning to play and tend net, John began painting masks for himself, including the one shown here, showing off his love for his home state Colorado, with the flag on one side, and raging bull on the other, done in red, blue and yellow.
John is an aspiring front end web developer and graphic designer and is currently looking for a job. See his portfolio here. John currently lives in Denver with his girlfriend and two dogs.
